A Week of Activities to Celebrate Oamaru’s 150th Birthday

Today, 19 December 2012, marks the 150th anniversary since an ordinance was issued authorising the establishment of the Oamaru Town Board, and thus marks our town’s 150th birthday! As befits such a momentous occasion, there are a number of activities this week that all are welcome to join in to help us to celebrate this great occasion:

Wednesday, 19 December 2012

11am: Bike Ride and Picnic (at the Kakanui River boatsheds). Meet at the corner of Wharfe and Tamar Streets (unless weather is truly foul).

6:30pm: Drinks at the Criterion Hotel, followed by a bike ride to watch The Hobbit at the Limelight Cinema (book your tickets for the film directly). Be sure to bring locks and lights!

9am: Champagne breakfast in Harbour Street. BYO champagne and drinking vessels. Pancakes (bacon, banana and maple syrup) are $6 from the ice cream parlour, coffee from Lazy Cat pottery and fudge café. (If weather is wet or too windy, venue will be the Grainstore Gallery on Harbour Street.)

6:30pm to 8pm: Grand opening of “Studio Realm” and “Mirror City Letterpress”, Harbour Street. All welcome, opposite Oasis antiques.

8pm ’til Late: Enjoy the victuallers and establishments of the Historic Precinct, the Criterion Hotel, Birdlands and maybe the Loan & Merc (!).

3pm: Afternoon tea at Annie’s Tearooms (please book in advance ph. 434 1230).

6pm: “The Last Supper” before the End of the Mayan Calendar. A picnic at the Harbourside (Armour) Gardens with Ukulele and Song from the intergalactic ukelele ensemble (Grainstore Gallery if wet). BYO picnic tea, ukulele and vocal chords.

8:30pm: “End of the World” (as we know it) party at Birdlands. Join us to go out in style!

Saturday, 22 December 2012

9am: First breakfast of the New World, Oamaru Public Gardens barbecue area. Porridge cooked by Faigan, ready at 9am. Bring other stuff (and crockery, etc).

3pm to Late: Asado (Argentinan style barbecue) at Donna’s and Oliver’s Tree Hut. BYO drinks, eating and drinking gear, and a plate of salad or dessert. All welcome! (Contact us for information on location.)

EXACTLY 150 years since the Oamaru Town Board first convened!

2pm to Late: 60s party (party like it’s 1962–Oamaru’s Centenary!). 7-10 bands (still awaiting confirmation of surprise bands!), including “Kill Martha” (Waitati, features Greens co-leader Meteria Turei and whanau), “Skip (the Sinister Minister)” (Greymouth/Wellington), “The Carpet Floor” (Oamaru), Reed Street Posse (Oamaru), the Oamaru Intergalactic Ukulele ensemble and many other great acts! Venue: Smith’s Grainstore, the Grainstore Gallery and Birdlands Winebar. Licensed event and BYO (upstairs only).
