With summer just around the corner, it’s that time of year when Oamaru’s social and activities calendar becomes very hectic indeed, with loads of events scheduled that highlight every aspect of the town’s life. Here’s a concise list of some of the more exciting events, which some of you may want to write into your own diaries:
11 December 2012: The Mayor of Oamaru will host an invitation-only Christmas function at the Oamaru Opera House, which will also serve as the kick-off of the year-long Oamaru 150th anniversary celebrations.
16 December 2012: During the weekly Sunday farmers’ market, his Worship the Mayor will read from the Ordinance and Proclamation for the establishment of the Oamaru Town Board in 1862, followed by a cutting of the commemorative cake.
18 – 23 December 2012: A five-day non-stop party to acknowledge the important milestone of Oamaru’s 150th birthday, featuring picnics, barbeques, bands, bike rides, movies, fun and frolics. Culminates in an all-day Music Festival (Reggae, Rock & Ukulele Bands) at the Grainstore Gallery on the day the Oamaru Town Board first convened 150 years ago.
6 – 10 February 2013: Oamaru Scott 100th Anniversary Celebrations: In February 2013 Oamaru Harbour will come alive with the celebration of a golden age in exploration, 100 years since Scott’s Terra Nova arrived off Oamaru Harbour. The town will host five days of events including sea and land activities, education and adventure programmes, art, literature and lectures. 22 – 23 February 2013: The North Otago A&P (Agricultural and Pastoral) 150th Show, celebrating 150 years of farming in the Oamaru area. A weekend of entertainment for young and old; stock judging, home industries, stallholders, “surprise” celebrities and trade shows. 27 March 2013: Network Waitaki presents Dame Kiri te Kanawa, a gala evening commencing at 6.30pm celebrating the 150 year Anniversary of Oamaru, with Dame Kiri in concert at 8pm. Glamorous, elegant, stunningly beautiful, Kiri Te Kanawa is a household name throughout the world of music. This concert has sold out and the lucky 548 people to secure tickets are in for an extraordinary evening in Oamaru.
31 May – 2 June 2013: Steampunk Festival Weekend and the 2nd Annual “Oamaru on Fire”. “Oamaru On Fire’ is a fire, steam, sound and lighting spectacular taking place in Harbour St on Friday 31 May. The event kicks off the Steampunk NZ Festival; with Steampunk Dirigible Racing on Saturday 01 June & the legendary Steampunk Fashion Show on Sunday 02 June.
