Penguin Numbers for October

The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony gets really busy in October in more ways than one. For one thing, with the arrival of spring, overseas visitors begin to come in greater numbers, so there are more people visiting the colony, but for another thing the penguins themselves are busy creating the next generation of penguins! As a result, there are more penguins coming in each night, since as the baby penguins develop, the parent penguins have to return from fishing more often to feed the growing chicks. Initially one of the parents stays back in the nest with the chicks, but eventually the demands of the babies become so great that both parents have to fish to be able to get enough food to feed them.

You can now track the penguin numbers yourself, thanks to the penguin colony’s new online counter, which even has an RSS feed for you to sign up to. To sign up for the daily update, click here.
